We have covered ch.1-12 in which John wrote about "the Lord's public ministry" [His activities in various areas, including His teaching and miracles]. 3. Beginning at ch.13 John wrote about "the Lord's personal ministry" [His activities with His apostles]. 4. In this lesson we are examining the information presented in John 13:1-17. Discussion: I. (John 13:1) THE TIME TO OBSERVE PASSOVER WAS APPROACHING
A. Passover was observed in the evening of the 14th day of the 1st month, and the 7-day feast of unleavened bread followed (Exodus 12:1-15). B. At this time Jesus knew what was about to happen, and He loved His followers "unto the end." II. (John 13:2-3) JESUS ATE THE PASSOVER MEAL WITH HIS APOSTLES
A. Judas Iscariot allowed Satan to influence him to betray Jesus (Psalm 41:9). B. Jesus was fully aware of His authority from the Father. C. This was when Jesus gave instructions for eating His Supper (Matthew 26:26-29). D. To fully understand and appreciate what took place, we must keep certain things in mind. 1. The apostles were very concerned about which one was the greatest. a. Matthew 18:1-4 b. Matthew 20:20-28 2. According to Luke 22:19-20, 24, strife developed among the apostles over this issue. III. (John 13:4-5) JESUS WASHED THE APOSTLES' FEET IV. (John 13:6-11) JESUS INTERACTED WITH PETER V. (John 13:12-17) JESUS REVEALED THE LESSON HE WANTED THE APOSTLES TO LEARN
A. Jesus set a powerful example of humility and service. B. By following His example the apostles would be blessed. C. Let us learn from what took place on this occasion and follow the instructions given in: 1. Galatians 5:13-15 2. 1 Peter 5:5-6.
