The Gospel of john
(Lesson 29)

Introduction:

         1. The Gospel of John provides a wealth of information that will help us to grow in the knowledge of Christ
as we are instructed in 2 Peter 3:18.
         2. After covering the Lord's public ministry (ch.1-12), we have begun a study of His private ministry (ch.13-17).
         3. We previously observed from John 13:1-17 how:
             a. Jesus ate the Passover meal with the apostles
             b. Jesus washed the apostles' feet.
         4. In this lesson we are covering the information presented in John 13:18-38.

Discussion:

I.           (John 13:18-30) JESUS  IDENTIFIED  JUDAS  AS  THE  BETRAYER

         A. Earlier,:
             1. Judas allowed Satan to influence him to betray Jesus (vs.2)
             2. Jesus knew who would betray Him when He washed the apostles' feet (vs.10-11).
         B. (vs.18-20) Judas' betrayal would fulfill the prophecy in Psalm 41:9.
         C. (vs.21) Jesus was troubled when He plainly stated that one of the apostles would betray Him.
         D. (vs.22) The apostles did not know who the betrayer was.
         E. (vs.23-26) Judas was identified as the betrayer.
         F. (vs.27-30) Judas left Jesus and the other apostles.
         G. Additional details are revealed in:
             1. Matthew 26:3-4, 14-16
             2. Mark 12:12; 14:10-11
             3. Luke 19:47-48; 22:3-6.

II.          (John 13:31-38) JESUS  SPOKE  TO  THE  REMAINING  APOSTLES

         A. (vs.31-32) The events that were about to take place would glorify Jesus and the Father, as indicated earlier
             in John 12:23, 27-28.
         B. (vs.33) Jesus informed the apostles that He was leaving them and they could not go with Him.
         C. (vs.34-35) Jesus gave His "new commandment."
         D. (vs.36-38) Jesus informed Peter that he would deny Him three times.
