jesus loved the scriptures
(psalm 119:97)

Introduction:

         1. This morning we covered a number of statements in Psalm 119 that help us understand why the writer
             loved God's law.
         2. The information we covered should lead us to feel the same way about the Scriptures.
         3. This evening we are concentrating on the fact that "Jesus loved the Scriptures."
         4. In our lesson we are examining several occasions when Jesus showed His love for God's Word.
         5. The Lord's example should encourage us to feel the same way.
         6. Let us begin by showing how . . .

Discussion:

I.           JESUS  SHOWED  HIS  LOVE  FOR  THE  SCRIPTURES  AT  A  YOUNG  AGE

         A. According to Luke 2, Jesus went to Jerusalem with Joseph and Mary to observe Passover when He was
             12 years old.
         B. When the feast concluded, Joseph and Mary were returning to Nazareth.
         C. After traveling a day's journey, Joseph and Mary discovered Jesus was not with the group, so they went
             back to Jerusalem.
         D. Notice what they found in vs.46.
         E. Jesus' knowledge made quite an impression on those who were present (vs.47).
         F. It certainly appears that Joseph and Mary had fulfilled their responsibilities as parents (Deuteronomy 6:4-7).
         G. Maybe this will help us understand why God chose them to raise His Son.
         H. By way of application, let us read Ephesians 6:4.

II.          JESUS  SHOWED  HIS  LOVE  FOR  THE  SCRIPTURES  WHEN  HE  WAS  TEMPTED  (Matthew 4)

         A. (vs.3) Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread.
         B. (vs.4) Jesus told Satan what is written in Deuteronomy 8:3.
         C. (vs.5-6) Satan tempted Jesus to jump off the temple.
         D. (vs.7) Jesus told Satan what is written in Deuteronomy 6:16.
         E. (vs.8-9) Satan tempted Jesus to fall down and worship him.
         F. (vs.10) Jesus told Satan what is written in Deuteronomy 6:13.
         G. By way of application, let us read Psalm 119:11.

III.         JESUS  SHOWED  HIS  LOVE  FOR  THE  SCRIPTURES  WHEN  HE  WAS  ASKED  VARIOUS  QUESTIONS

         A. Matthew 15:1-9
             1. (vs.1-2) The scribes and Pharisees asked Jesus why His disciples violated their tradition.
             2. (vs.3-9) Jesus pointed out the inconsistency of these people by showing how they disobeyed
                 Exodus 20:12 and 21:17.
         B. Matthew 19:3-9
             1. (vs.3, 7) The Pharisees tested Jesus by asking him questions about divorce.
             2. (vs.4-6, 8-9) Jesus pointed out God's will for marriage from the beginning (Genesis 2:24).
         C. Matthew 22:23-32
             1. (vs.23-28) The Sadducees approached Jesus with a hypothetical situation having to do with the
                 resurrection.
             2. (vs.29-32) In His response Jesus quoted Exodus 3:6 to show that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob still existed,
even though they had died years before God spoke to Moses at the burning bush.
         D. Matthew 22:34-40
             1. (vs.34-36) A Pharisee asked Jesus to identify the greatest commandment.
             2. (vs.37-40) Jesus showed that the responsibilities of the Hebrew people were summed up in
                 Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18.
         E. By way of application, let us read 1 Peter 3:15.

IV.         JESUS  SHOWED  HIS  LOVE  FOR  THE  SCRIPTURES  WHEN  HE  DIED

         A. The Lord's final words are found in Luke 23:46 -- He quoted Psalm 31:5.
         B. How does this apply to us?
             1. Those who can make this statement are able to leave this life in peace.
             2. Only those who have been "redeemed" can make this statement.
             3. According to Ephesians 1:7, "redemption" is through the Lord's blood.
             4. This passage describes "redemption" as "the forgiveness of sins."
             5. When does the Lord redeem us through His blood and forgive our sins?
             6. See Acts 2:38, 41, 47

Conclusion:

         1. (Hebrews 12:1-2) We are taught to look unto Jesus as we endeavor to run the Christian race.
         2. We have clearly seen that "Jesus loved the Scriptures."
         3. The Lord's example clearly shows how we will benefit from growing in our love for God's Word.
