we can know something else that daniel knew (daniel 9:1-2)
Introduction:
1. In Daniel 2:28, Daniel revealed something he knew -- "there is a God in heaven." 2. By examining evidence we can have the same knowledge. 3. This morning our lesson was based on the evidence that David wrote about in Psalm 19:1-6. 4. In Daniel 9:1-2, Daniel revealed something else he knew -- the Scriptures reveal "the Word of the Lord." 5. In our lesson we are pointing out how we can have the same knowledge. 6. Before we consider information given in Psalm 19, . . . Discussion: I. LET US FIRST EXAMINE THE SITUATION THAT LED DANIEL TO MAKE HIS STATEMENT
A. The captivity of Judah began in 606 BC. B. Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon at the time. C. Eventually, the Medes and Persians conquered Babylon (Daniel 5:28, 31). D. According to Daniel 9:1-2, Daniel understood from the writings of Jeremiah that the captivity would soon end. E. Jeremiah prophesied that the captivity would last 70 years (Jeremiah 25:8-12; 29:10). F. This information affected Daniel (Daniel 9:3-19). G. In addition to knowing that the Word of the Lord was revealed in the writings of Jeremiah, Daniel had the same knowledge about "the Law of Moses." H. Let us turn our attention to . . . II. A PASSAGE THAT HELPS US TO KNOW THE SCRIPTURES REVEAL THE WORD OF THE LORD (PSALM 19:7-11)
A. God's Word is described. 1. The law of the Lord is perfect. 2. The testimony of the Lord is sure. 3. The statutes of the Lord are right. 4. The commandment of the Lord is pure. 5. The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. B. God has revealed His Word for our benefit. 1. The law of the Lord "converts" [restores] the soul. 2. The testimony of the Lord makes the simple wise. 3. The statutes of the Lord cause the heart to rejoice. 4. The commandment of the Lord enlightens the eyes. C. (vs.10-11) The judgments of the Lord recorded in His Word are precious. 1. They are to be desired more than much fine gold. 2. They are sweeter than honey from the comb. 3. Those who heed their warnings and keep them will receive a great reward. Conclusion:
1. Daniel knew that there is a God in heaven, and he knew that the Scriptures reveal the Lord's Word. 2. We can have the same knowledge. 3. Those who have this knowledge will want to be in good standing with God (Psalm 19:12-14). a. (vs.12) We will want to be cleansed of "secret faults." b. (vs.13) We will want to avoid "presumptuous" [willful] sins. c. (vs.14) We will want our words and the meditation of our hearts to be acceptable in God's sight (Psalm 139:23-24).
