The Gospel of john
(Lesson 42)

Introduction:

         1. In ch.18-20 of his Gospel the apostle John wrote about the Lord's "passion ministry," including His trials.
         2. Previously, we covered passages that teach us about the Lord's betrayal by Judas, His arrest, His
interrogation by Annas, Peter's denial, His trials before Caiaphas and the Jewish council, and His first
             trial before Pilate.
         3. In this lesson we are studying passages from all 4 Gospels that teach us about the Lord's trial before
Herod and His second trial before Pilate.

Discussion:

I.           (Luke 23:6-12) JESUS  WAS  TRIED  BEFORE  HEROD

         A. Pilate sent Jesus to appear before Herod [Herod Antipas].
             1. To illustrate Herod's character:
                 a. he had John beheaded (Matthew 14:3-10)
                 b. Jesus referred to him as a "fox" (Luke 13:31-32).
             2. Herod had wanted to see Jesus for some time (Luke 9:7-9).
         B. Jesus did not respond to Herod's questions.
         C. Jesus was mocked and sent back to appear before Pilate.
         D. Consequently, Pilate and Herod became friends.

II.          JESUS  FACED  HIS  SECOND  TRIAL  BEFORE  PILATE

         A. Pilate and Herod agreed that Jesus did not deserve to die (Luke 23:13-17).
         B. Pilate received a warning from his wife (Matthew 27:19).
         C. Pilate wanted to release Jesus; however, he released Barabbas [an insurrectionist, a murderer, and a
             robber].
             1. Matthew 27:15-18, 20-21, 26a
             2. Mark 15:6-11, 15a
             3. Luke 23:18-19, 25
             4. John 18:39-40
         D. Pilate washed his hands before the crowd in an attempt to escape his involvement (Matthew 27:24-25).
         E. The crowd demanded that Jesus be crucified.
             1. Matthew 27:22-23
             2. Mark 15:12-14
             3. Luke 23:20-23
             4. John 19:6-15
         F. Jesus was dressed in a robe, a crown of thorns was placed on His head, He was scourged, and He was
             abused.
             1. Matthew 27:27-31
             2. Mark 15:15-20
             3. John 19:1-5
         G. Pilate delivered Jesus to the Jews to be crucified.
             1. John 19:16
             2. Luke 23:24-25
