1. In his Gospel the apostle John recorded a great amount of information that helps us to grow in the knowledge of Christ as we are instructed in 2 Peter 3:18. 2. From chapter 1: a. we learn that Jesus is a member of the eternal Godhead, and He became flesh b. we learn from John the Baptist that Jesus is the Lamb of God and the Son of God c. we learn how certain men became followers of the Lord, including Andrew, Peter, Philip, and Nathanael. 3. This lesson is a study of chapter 2. a. (vs.1-11) Jesus performed His first miracle in Cana of Galilee. b. (vs.12) Jesus went to Capernaum with His family and His disciples. c. A. (vs.1-2) A marriage took place in Cana. 1. Mary was present. 2. Jesus and His disciples were invited. B. (vs.3-5) Mary informed Jesus that wine was needed. C. (vs.6-10) Jesus turned water into wine. 1. Each of these 6 water pots would have held 20-30 gallons. 2. The wine that Jesus made is described as "good." D. (vs.11) As a result of His first miracle, Jesus "manifested forth His glory," and "His disciples believed on Him." II. (John 2:12) JESUS WENT TO CAPERNAUM WITH HIS FAMILY AND HIS DISCIPLES III. (John 2:13-25) JESUS WENT TO JERUSALEM FOR PASSOVER
A. (vs.13) Jesus traveled to Jerusalem to observe Passover (Exodus 12:1-8, 14-18, 24-27). B. (vs.14-17) Jesus cleansed the temple. 1. A provision in the law was being abused (Deuteronomy 14:23-26). 2. The disciples remembered David's statement in Psalm 69:9. C. (vs.18-22) When He was asked to show a sign, Jesus foretold His resurrection. D. (vs.23-25) These verses lay the foundation for the Lord's conversation with Nicodemus (ch.3). 1. The Lord's miracles led many people to believe on Him. 2. The Lord "knew what was in man."
