The Gospel of john
(Lesson 12)

Introduction:

         1. The Gospel of John contains a great amount of information that will help us to grow in the knowledge
of Christ as we are instructed in 2 Peter 3:18.
         2. According to John 20:30-31, John recorded eight of the Lord's miracles to provide evidence that leads us
to believe "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God."
             a. He turned water into wine (2:1-11).
             b. He healed the nobleman's son (4:46-54).
             c. He healed the impotent man (5:1-9).
             d. He fed the 5,000 (6:1-14).
             e. He walked on water (6:15-21).
             f. He gave sight to a man born blind (9:1-7).
             g. He raised Lazarus from the grave (11:1-45).
             h. He caused a great catch of fish (21:1-14).
         3. In this lesson we are studying the Lord's miracles recorded in John 6.
             a. (vs.1-14) Jesus fed the 5,000.
             b. (vs.15-21) Jesus walked on water.

Discussion:

I.           (John 6:1-14) JESUS  FED  THE  5,000

         A. This miracle of Jesus is the only one recorded in all four Gospels.
             1. Matthew 14:13-21
             2. Mark 6:30-44
             3. Luke 9:10-17
         B. (vs.1-4) Many people were following the Lord.
             1. They followed Him because of His miracles.
             2. The apostles returned from fulfilling the limited commission, and they went with the Lord to a
                 secluded area.
             3. The crowds continued following the Lord.
         C. (vs.5-10) In the evening Jesus talked with the apostles about feeding this great multitude consisting of
5,000 men in addition to women and children.
             1. There was not sufficient food for all the people, and there was not enough money to buy food for
                 everyone.
             2. The suggestion was made that everyone provide for themselves.
         D. (vs.11-14) Jesus miraculously provided food for everyone.
             1. Jesus first gave thanks.
             2. He then gave the food to the apostles who gave it to the people.
             3. Not only did everyone eat as much as they wanted, but there were 12 baskets of leftovers.
             4. Those present recognized Jesus as the great Prophet that Moses wrote about in Deuteronomy 18:15-19.

II.          (John 6:15-21) JESUS  WALKED  ON  WATER

         A. This miracle of Jesus is also recorded in:
             1. Matthew 14:22-33
             2. Mark 6:45-51.
         B. The apostles were trying to cross the sea, but a strong wind prevented them from doing so.
         C. When Jesus approached, walking on the water, the apostles were afraid.
         D. This is the occasion when Peter walked on the water.
         E. When Jesus entered the boat the wind ceased.
         F. Those who were in the boat were convinced that Jesus is "the Son of God."
