1. As we study the Gospel of John let us remember the admonition given in 2 Peter 3:18 [we are to grow in the knowledge of Christ]. 2. In our last lesson we studied the Lord's miracles recorded in John 6:1-21. a. (vs.1-14) Jesus fed the 5,000. b. (vs.15-21) Jesus walked on the water. 3. According to vs.14, those who saw Jesus feed the 5,000 recognized Him as the Prophet mentioned in Deuteronomy 18:15-19. 4. We learn from vs.15 that Jesus was aware of the plan to "take Him by force, to make Him a king." 5. These responses indicate that the people did not have accurate knowledge of the Lord. 6. In the rest of John 6 Jesus used this situation to show how He is "the bread of life." 7. In this lesson we are studying the information revealed in John 6:22-40. 8. As Jesus explained that He is "the bread of life" several references were made to "manna." Discussion: I. LET US FIRST REVIEW SEVERAL PRINCIPLES THAT RELATE TO "MANNA"
A. God provided manna to the Israelites in response to their murmuring (Exodus 16:1-4). B. (Exodus 16:14-15) Moses described manna as "the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat." C. A pot of manna was placed in the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 16:32-34; Hebrews 9:4). D. God supplied manna 40 years (Exodus 16:35; Joshua 5:10-12). E. During that time the Israelites occasionally complained (Numbers 11:4-6; 21:5-6). F. When the Ark of the Covenant was eventually placed in the temple the pot of manna was no longer in it (1 Kings 8:6, 9). II. (John 6:22-40) JESUS HAD A DISCUSSION WITH THE PEOPLE WHO FOLLOWED HIM TO CAPERNAUM
A. (vs.22-25) After Jesus fed the 5,000 a crowd of people followed Him to Capernaum. B. (vs.26-29) Jesus called upon these people to follow Him for the right reason -- true believers are concerned with "everlasting life." C. (vs.30-33) Jesus explained that He is the true bread of God from heaven. D. (vs.34-40) Jesus responded to the request to provide bread (John 4:7-16).
