1. The Gospel of John contains a great amount of information that will help us to grow in the knowledge of Christ as we are instructed in 2 Peter 3:18. 2. We are presently studying chapter 6 in which Jesus explained in detail how He is "the bread of life." 3. In this lesson we are covering John 6:60-71. 4. Before we do so, . . . Discussion: I. LET US REVIEW JOHN 6:1-59
A. Before Jesus claimed to be "the bread of life," He validated His claim by feeding the 5,000 (vs.1-13). B. The reaction of the people in vs.14-15 shows how they did not properly recognize Him. C. After Jesus and His disciples traveled to Capernaum, a number of people went there "seeking for Jesus" (vs.16-24). D. Jesus had a discussion with those who followed Him to Capernaum (vs.25-40). 1. Jesus knew why these people followed Him (vs.26). 2. Jesus taught them to pursue the true food that leads to eternal life (vs.27-29, 32-33, 35, 40). E. Jesus had a discussion with the Jewish leaders (vs.41-59). 1. They murmured at Jesus because of His claim (vs.41). 2. Jesus used some graphic terms to show them that He is the true source of everlasting life (vs.47-48, 50-51). 3. Their question in vs.52 indicates that they did not understand the Lord's teaching. 4. Jesus responded in vs.53-58 (see Romans 6:3-4). F. On the basis of this information, . . . II. LET US EXAMINE JOHN 6:60-71 IN WHICH JESUS HAD A DISCUSSION WITH HIS DISCIPLES
A. According to vs.60-66, many of the Lord's disciples found His teaching to be "hard." 1. Jesus knew the reactions of those who claimed to be His disciples. a. He reasoned with those who murmured at His teaching (vs.61-63). b. He reasoned with those who did not believe (vs.64-65). 2. Many disciples "went back, and walked no more with Him" (vs.66). B. In vs.67-71 Jesus questioned the apostles. 1. He first asked if they would also turn from Him (vs.67). 2. Peter's response in vs.68-69 indicates that he understood and believed the Lord's teaching about everlasting life. 3. The Lord's other question in vs.70-71 shows that He knew Judas would betray Him.
