The Gospel of john
(Lesson 20)

Introduction:

         1. The Gospel of John is a tremendous source of information that will help us to grow in the knowledge of
Christ as we are instructed in 2 Peter 3:18.
         2. We are continuing our study of John 8 in which Jesus identified Himself as "the light of the world" (vs.12).
         3. Review (vs.1-30):
             a. (vs.1-11) While Jesus was teaching in the temple, the scribes and Pharisees confronted Him with the
                 woman caught in adultery.
             b. (vs.12-30) After Jesus presented information about His identity, "many believed on Him" (vs.30).
         4. In this lesson we are covering the information presented in John 8:31-59.
         5. This information helps us to better understand the statement found in John 1:11 -- "He came unto His
own, and His own received Him not."

Discussion:

I.           (John 8:31-32) JESUS  GAVE  HIS  REQUIREMENTS  FOR  BEING  HIS  TRUE  DISCIPLES

         A. Jesus spoke these words to those Jews who believed on Him -- simply believing on Jesus did not make
             these people His true disciples.
         B. To be the Lord's true disciples we must "continue" [abide] in His word.
         C. Doing so enables a person to enjoy 2 great blessings: "knowing the truth" and "being free."
         D. Rather than submit to the Lord's requirements, . . .

II.          (John 8:33-59) THE  JEWS  WHO  BELIEVED  ON  JESUS  ARGUED  WITH  HIM

         A. (vs.33) The Jews first denied ever being in bondage to anyone [what about Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Greece,
             and Rome?].
         B. (vs.34-38) Jesus showed how they were in bondage to sin, but He could make them free.
         C. (vs.39a) The Jews trusted in their relationship with Abraham.
         D. (vs.39b-41a) Although these people were Abraham's descendants, they actually had another father.
         E. (vs.41b) These Jews claimed to be God's children.
         F. (vs.42-47) Jesus identified their real father -- the devil.
         G. (vs.48-59) The Jews attacked Jesus personally.
             1. (vs.48-56) They accused Jesus of being a Samaritan and having a devil.
             2. (vs.57-58) They rejected the Lord's statement that He existed before Abraham.
             3. (vs.59) They wanted to stone Jesus, but He escaped.
