1. In our lesson we are studying "3 important admonitions" that are given in Colossians 3:16-17. 2. Let us begin with . . . Discussion: I. THE ADMONITION GIVEN IN VS. 17
A. Whatever we do in word or deed is to be done "in the name of the Lord Jesus." 1. This is an important matter because it relates to everything we say and do. 2. We must properly understand what is involved in doing things in the Lord's name. a. (Matthew 7:21-23) Jesus said that many will be lost who claimed to do great works "in His name." b. By examining several verses we can understand what the Lord requires. B. (Mark 16:17-18) Jesus said that the apostles would be able to perform great miracles "in His name." C. (Acts 3:6) Peter healed a lame man "in the name of Jesus Christ." D. (Acts 4:5-7) Peter was asked by what name he had healed the man. 1. (vs.7) Two terms are used interchangeably: "power" [authority] and "name." 2. Peter was being asked, "By whose authority, or by whose name have you done this?" 3. Jesus had given Peter the authority to perform this miracle. 4. (Acts 4:10) Peter said that this miracle was performed in the Lord's name. E. "In the name of the Lord Jesus" simply means "by the authority of Christ." F. (Colossians 3:17) We are to only say and do those things that Christ authorizes. G. We would expect this because Christ has all authority. 1. (Matthew 28:18) He claimed to have "all power [authority]." 2. (John 17:2) The Father gave Jesus this authority. H. Christ has all authority -- He requires His followers to only say and do those things that He has authorized to say and do. I. To know what Christ has authorized us to say and do we must comply with . . . II. THE ADMONITION GIVEN IN VS. 16a
A. We must let the Lord's Word "dwell in us richly in all wisdom." 1. We learn what Christ has authorized us to say and do in His Word. 2. It is essential for us to let His Word dwell in us. B. The Lord's Word is the New Testament (Hebrews 9:15). C. A similar admonition is given in James 1:25. D. Letting the Lord's Word dwell is us richly in all wisdom will: 1. make us aware of what the Lord wants us to say and do 2. keep us from doing what He does not want us to say and do. E. Summarizing: 1. We must only say and do those things that are authorized by Christ. 2. We find what Christ has authorized us to say and do in His Word, the New Testament. 3. We must allow His Word to dwell in us richly in all wisdom. F. We can illustrate what we have been talking about by examining . . . III. THE ADMONITION GIVEN IN VS. 16b
A. The Lord authorizes His followers to "sing" in worship. 1. We are to teach and admonish one another as we sing [teaching involves verbal communication of the truth]. 2. We are to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. 3. We are to sing with grace in our hearts to the Lord. B. We must not alter the Lord's Word in any way (Revelation 22:18-19). Conclusion:
1. May God help us to only say and do those things that His Son has authorized in His Word! 2. To be saved, see Acts 4:12.
