1. At the present time a great amount of attention is being given to health issues and medical problems. 2. Let us be reminded that "Jesus is the great healer." Discussion:
I. ACCORDING TO LUKE 4:14-21, JESUS CAME TO HEAL
A. Let us briefly consider the background for these passages. 1. We learn from Luke 3:21-22 that Jesus was baptized. 2. Following His baptism Jesus was tempted in the wilderness (Luke 4:1-13). 3. Luke showed in vs.14-15 that Jesus returned to Galilee where He taught in the synagogues. B. In Galilee Jesus came to Nazareth where He was raised. 1. On the Sabbath He went to the synagogue where He was given an opportunity to read Scripture. 2. He read Isaiah 61:1-2 and stated that Isaiah's prophecy was being fulfilled. C. When we analyze these statements from Isaiah, we see that Jesus came for the purpose of healing. D. However, His healing can be divided into 2 categories. 1. He came to heal people "physically." 2. He came to heal people "spiritually." II. LET US CONSIDER HOW JESUS CAME TO HEAL PEOPLE "PHYSICALLY"
A. During His ministry Jesus healed all types of sicknesses. B. Matthew recorded several summary statements that show this to be the case. 1. Matthew 4:23-25 2. Matthew 9:35 3. Matthew 15:29-31 C. Matthew also recorded many specific examples of the Lord's healing. 1. Matthew 8:1-3 2. Matthew 8:14-15 3. Matthew 20:30-34 D. As Jesus read Isaiah's prophecy He showed that He came to heal people "physically," and He did so. III. LET US CONSIDER HOW JESUS CAME TO HEAL PEOPLE "SPIRITUALLY"
A. Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would suffer so we can receive "spiritual healing" (Isaiah 53:4-6). B. We need "spiritual healing" (Romans 3:23; 6:23). C. David acknowledged his need for his soul to be healed (Psalm 41:4). D. Jesus invites us to come to Him to receive "rest" (Matthew 11:28-30). E. In Acts 2:36-41 we read about 3,000 people who received "spiritual healing" and how they received it. Conclusion:
1. A great amount of attention is being focused on a cure for coronavirus, a serious physical illness. 2. Have you given proper attention to "spiritual healing?" 3. Jesus is the great healer.
