The Story of Jesus
Jesus' Birth - Specific Details

(Lesson 02)

Introduction:
 

         1. To help us grow in the knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 3:18) we are studying "The Story of Jesus."
         2. After covering some general matters relating to the Lord's birth, we are turning our attention to
             specific details found in Matthew and Luke.

Discussion:

I.           MARY  AND  JOSEPH  WERE  INFORMED  ABOUT  JESUS'  BIRTH

         A. (Luke 1:26-38) The angel Gabriel informed Mary that she would give birth to Jesus.
         B. (Matthew 1:18-25) An angel informed Joseph that Mary would give birth to Jesus.

II.          THE  GENEALOGIES  OF  JESUS

         A. (Matthew 1:1-17) Joseph's genealogy is traced through David to Abraham, including the
             kings of Judah (Genesis 12:1-3; 26:1-4; 28:10-14; 49:8-10).
         B. (Luke 3:23-38) Mary's genealogy is traced through Abraham to Adam (Genesis 3:15).

III.         JESUS'  BIRTH

         A. (Luke 2:1-7) Jesus was born while Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).
         B. (Luke 2:8-20) Jesus' birth was announced to the shepherds.

IV.         ADDITIONAL  DETAILS

         A. (Luke 2:21) Jesus was circumcised and named (Leviticus 12:1-3).
         B. (Luke 2:22-24) Jesus was taken to the temple (Leviticus 12:4-8).
         C. (Luke 2:25-31) Simeon and Anna saw Jesus in the temple.
         D. (Matthew 2:1-12) Jesus was visited by the wise men.
         E. (Matthew 2:13-23) Jesus was taken to Egypt to escape Herod.
