I.           GENERAL  INFORMATION

         A. The book of Psalms is one of five books of poetry in the Old Testament.
             1. The Psalms consist of 150 poems and songs composed over a long period of time by a number of
                 writers, including:
                 a. Moses: 1 (90)
                 b. David: 73 (3-9; 11-32; 34-41; 51-65; 68-70; 86; 101; 103; 108-110; 122; 124; 131; 133; 138-145)
                 c. Asaph: 12 (50; 73-83)
                 d. Descendants of Korah: 10 (42; 44-49; 84-85; 87)
                 e. Solomon: 2 (72; 127)
                 f.  Heman: 1 (88)
                 g. Ethan: 1 (89)
                 h. 50 anonymous.
             2. The inspiration of the Psalms is questioned by some; however, Jesus recognized them as Scripture
                 (Luke 24:44).
         B. The book of Psalms is actually a collection of five shorter books.
             1. Book I: Psalms 1-41
             2. Book II: Psalms 42-72
             3. Book III: Psalms 73-89
             4. Book IV: Psalms 90-106
             5. Book V: Psalms 107-150

II.          CHRISTIANS  NEED  TO  BE  VERY  FAMILIAR  WITH  THE  PSALMS

         A. The Psalms are part of the Old Testament Scriptures that "were written for our learning" (Romans 15:4).
         B. The Psalms help us to appreciate:
             1. God's Word (119:97)
             2. worship (122:1)
             3. unity among brethren (133:1-3)
             4. children (127:3)
             5. each day (118:24)
             6. spending eternity with God (84:10).
         C. "Psalms" are to be included in our singing (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).
