The Story of Jesus
Jesus' Childhood

(Lesson 03)

Introduction:
 

         1. Our purpose for studying "The Story of Jesus" is to help us grow in our knowledge of
             Christ (2 Peter 3:18).
         2. In our study of the Lord's birth we pointed out from Matthew 2 that:
             a. Jesus was born in Bethlehem (vs.1)
             b. Joseph took Mary and Jesus to Egypt to avoid Herod (vs.13-14)
             c. the family returned to Nazareth after Herod died (vs.19-23).
         3. This lesson is a study of Jesus' childhood.

Discussion:

I.           IMPORTANT  INFORMATION  RELATING  TO  JESUS'  CHILDHOOD  IS  RECORDED 
             IN  LUKE  2:39-52


         A. (vs.39-40) Jesus grew up in Nazareth.
         B. (vs.41) Joseph and Mary went to Jerusalem every year to observe Passover
             (Exodus 12:14-20, 24-27).
         C. (vs.42) One trip to Jerusalem occurred when Jesus was twelve.
         D. (vs.43) As Joseph and Mary were going home, Jesus remained in Jerusalem.
         E. (vs.44-47) Jesus was found in the temple.
         F. (vs.48-50) Mary questioned Jesus.
         G. (vs.51) Joseph, Mary, and Jesus returned to Nazareth where He was subject to them.
         H. (vs.52) Jesus grew in four areas: intellectually, physically, spiritually, and socially.

II.          ADDITIONAL  INFORMATION  RELATING  TO  CHILDREN  AND  PARENTS

         A. Children are a "heritage of the Lord" (Psalm 127:3).
         B. As a child, Jesus provided the proper example for children to follow (Ephesians 6:1-3;
             Colossians 3:20).
         C. Joseph and Mary set proper examples for parents to follow (Colossians 3:21; Ephesians 6:4;
             Titus 2:3-5; 2 Timothy 1:5).
