Additional Matters Relating to God's Word (Hebrews 4:12)
Introduction:
1. This morning we studied passages that teach: a. how obeying the Gospel involves hearing God's Word b. how God's Word is to be heard. 2. The Bible is filled with information about God's Word. 3. For example, in Hebrews 4:12 we read: a. a description of God's Word b. about the impact that God's Word will have when we hear it properly. 4. In this lesson we are considering some "additional matters relating to God's Word." 5. Let us first consider some . . .
Discussion:
I. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT GOD'S WORD (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
A. First, the Scriptures are God's inspired Word. 1. This point is clearly made in 2 Timothy 3:16a. 2. The process whereby God revealed His Word is explained in: a. 1 Corinthians 2:9-13 b. Ephesians 3:3-5. B. Also, the Scriptures are "profitable" (2 Timothy 3:16b). 1. The Scriptures are profitable for: a. "doctrine" b. "reproof" c. "correction" d. "instruction in righteousness." 2. David also showed how the Scriptures are profitable in Psalm 19:7-11. C. God gave us the Scriptures so we could profit from them and become the kind of people He wants us to be (2 Timothy 3:17).
II. GOD HAS GIVEN HIS PEOPLE RESPONSIBILITIES THAT RELATE TO HIS WORD
A. (John 5:38-40) Jesus said, "Search the Scriptures." 1. Searching the Scriptures is important because they "testify" of Jesus. 2. Those who learn about Jesus, believe Him, and come to Him will receive "life." B. (1 Timothy 4:13-16) God's people are to "heed" His Word. 1. God's Word deserves our best attention, we are to meditate upon it, and we are to put it into practice. 2. By doing so others will be influenced by our conduct. C. God's people are to teach His Word, especially to our children. 1. Genesis 18:19 2. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 3. Ephesians 6:4
Conclusion:
1. Obeying the Gospel certainly involves hearing God's inspired Word. 2. After obeying the Gospel we must: a. continue hearing God's Word properly b. fulfill our responsibilities that relate to God's Word.
