Hebrews 12:18-24
(Lesson 18)

Introduction:

         1. "The superiority of the Christian faith" is emphasized in the third section of Hebrews (ch.11-13).
             a. (ch.11) Faith is explained and illustrated.
             b. (ch.12) God's people are exhorted to persevere by:
                 1) running the race with "patience" (vs.1-3)
                 2) enduring God's chastening (vs.4-13)
                 3) following various instructions that relate to "perseverance" (vs.14-17), including:
                     a) pursuing peace and holiness (vs.14)
                     b) not coming short of God's grace (vs.15a)
                     c) not being troubled and defiled by any root of bitterness (vs.15b)
                     d) not being like Esau (vs.16-17).
         2. (vs.18-24) Mount Sinai and Mount Zion are contrasted.

Discussion:

I.           (vs.18-21) MOUNT  SINAI  IS  DESCRIBED

         A. The Israelites approached Mount Sinai after they left Egypt (Exodus 19:1-2).
         B. Mount Sinai was a physical place that could be touched; however, the Israelites were not allowed to
             touch it (Exodus 19:3-13).
         C. The occasion when God spoke at Mount Sinai was a frightening and terrifying experience
             (Exodus 19:14-19; 20:18-21).

II.          (vs.22-24) MOUNT  ZION  IS  DESCRIBED

         A. Christians are to approach Mount Zion.
         B. At this heavenly mountain God speaks through Christ (1:1-3).
         C. Christians are exhorted to draw near to this special place (4:16; 10:19-22).

Conclusion:

         1. Mount Zion is far greater than Mount Sinai.
         2. Being able to approach Mount Zion should help us to persevere.
