The Story of Jesus
Jesus' Sermons and Parables

(Lesson 07)

Introduction:

         1. To help us grow in the knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 3:18) we are studying "The Story of Jesus."
         2. In this lesson we are covering information that relates to "Jesus' sermons and parables."
         3. Let us begin our study by pointing out that . . .

Discussion:

I.           JESUS'  WORK  CONSISTED  PRIMARILY  OF  TEACHING  AND  PREACHING

         A. Following His baptism (Matthew 3:13-17) and temptation (Matthew 4:1-11), Jesus began His
             ministry by preaching (Matthew 4:17).
         B. He taught multitudes of people in many areas (Matthew 4:23-25; 9:35; 11:1).

II.          JESUS  WAS  A  VERY  EFFECTIVE  TEACHER  AND  PREACHER

         A. The responses of the people who heard Jesus indicate that He was effective.
             1. Matthew 7:28-29
             2. Mark 12:37
             3. Luke 5:1
             4. John 7:32, 45-46
         B. In addition to being a teacher, Jesus was a "doer" (Acts 1:1).

III.         IN  HIS  TEACHING  JESUS  ADDRESSED  MANY  SUBJECTS,  USING  A  VARIETY
             OF  METHODS

         A. In His "parable of the sower," Jesus illustrated the importance of hearing God's Word properly.
             1. Jesus first presented the parable (Luke 8:4-8).
             2. Jesus also explained the parable (Luke 8:11-15).
             3. Jesus gave a serious warning concerning the way we hear (Luke 8:18).
         B. In His discussion with Nicodemus, Jesus showed that one must be born again to become
             a member of God's kingdom (John 3:1-7).
         C. In His "Sermon on the Mount," Jesus presented some important information about prayer
              (Matthew 6:5-15).
             1. We must not pray like hypocrites (vs.5-6).
             2. We must not pray like heathens (vs.7-8).
             3. Jesus gave His model prayer (vs.9-13).
             4. Jesus emphasized the necessity of forgiveness (vs.14-15).
         D. (John 14:1-6) As Jesus comforted His disciples' hearts, He spoke to them about heaven as
              well as His return.
