Let Us Always Remember Certain Things (2 Peter 1:12-15)
Introduction:
1. When Peter wrote this letter he knew that his life would soon end (vs.14). 2. In this portion of his letter Peter placed special emphasis on always remembering certain things. a. He said he would do this as long as he lived. b. After his life ended, he wanted Christians to always remember these things. 3. The theme of our lesson is based on the statements found in these verses: "let us always remember certain things." Discussion: I. LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR CREATOR
A. This admonition is given in Ecclesiastes 12:1. B. Those who always remember God will be blessed (Psalm 20:6-8). C. Remembering God includes remembering and meditating upon His works and wonders (Psalm 77:11-12). D. The Bible covers both the positive and negative sides of remembering God. 1. The positive side is covered in Psalm 33:12. 2. The negative side is covered in Psalm 9:17. II. LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER CHRIST AND HIS SACRIFICE
A. This admonition is given in Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. B. Tomorrow will be observed as Memorial Day in our country -- it is a time for remembering the sacrifices made by so many (John 15:13). C. According to Acts 20:7, every Sunday is Memorial Day for Christians -- we remember Christ and His sacrifice. III. LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER THE WORDS OF CHRIST
A. This admonition is given in Acts 20:35. B. Jesus said in John 6:63 that His words "are spirit, and they are life." C. Remembering the Lord's Words includes remembering the words of the apostles. 1. Jude 17 2. 2 Peter 3:1-2 IV. LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER THE GOSPEL
A. This admonition is given in 1 Corinthians 15:1-2. B. We are saved by the Gospel if we "keep it in memory." C. After receiving it, we are to stand in it (Romans 1:16-17). V. LET US ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT GOD BLESSES THOSE WHO OBEY HIM
A. This admonition is given in Romans 6:17-18; 1 Peter 1:22-23. B. The Bible also points out the fate of those who disobey God. 1. Luke 17:32 2. Jude 5 3. 1 Peter 4:17 Conclusion:
1. There are many more, but we have examined 5 things that we must always remember. 2. Peter understood the importance of being reminded of these things on a regular basis. 3. The apostle Paul also understood this (1 Timothy 4:6). 4. Let us always remember these things!
