The Story of Jesus
Jesus' Burial

(Lesson 14)

Introduction:
 

         1. By carefully studying "The Story of Jesus" as it is revealed in the Scriptures (John 5:39) we are
             able to grow in our knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 3:18).
         2. This lesson is a study of "Jesus' burial."
         3. Let us first point out that . . .

Discussion:

I.           THE  LORD'S  BURIAL  WAS  A  SIGNIFICANT  EVENT

         A. The Lord's burial was prophesied in Isaiah 53:9 -- at His death His grave would be made with
             "the wicked" and "the rich."
         B. The Lord's burial is also an important part of the Gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
         C. Because the Lord's burial was such a significant event, let us turn our attention to . . .

II.          THE  DETAILS  OF  THE  LORD'S  BURIAL

         A. The details of the Lord's burial are recorded in:
             1. Matthew 27:57-66
             2. Mark 15:42-47
             3. Luke 23:50-56
             4. John 19:38-42.
         B. According to these verses,:
             1. Joseph received permission from Pilate to bury Jesus' body
                 a. Joseph was "a rich man" from Arimathaea.
                 b. He was a disciple of Jesus.
                 c. He was "an honorable counselor."
                 d. Being a good and just man, he did not go along with the events that took place.
             2. Joseph buried Jesus' body on the evening of the preparation day -- the Sabbath was quickly
                 approaching
             3. Joseph buried Jesus' body in his new tomb that was located nearby
             4. Nicodemus assisted Joseph in caring for the Lord's body
             5. Joseph and Nicodemus followed the burial custom of the Jews
             6. several women noted the location of the tomb -- they intended to return after the Sabbath
                 and provide additional care for Jesus' body
             7. the tomb was sealed with "a great stone"
             8. a group of soldiers guarded the tomb to prevent the possibility of the Lord's body being moved.
