Beatitude-Psalm 1
Introduction:
1. In His Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12), Jesus showed how certain people will be "blessed." 2. Similar statements are found throughout the Bible, including Psalm 1. 3. In his contrast of "the righteous" and "the ungodly," the writer showed how God blesses righteous people. Discussion: I. LET US CONSIDER WHAT IS WRITTEN ABOUT "THE RIGHTEOUS" A. (vs.6a) The Lord knows "the way of the righteous" (1 Peter 3:12). B. (vs.1-2) "The righteous" are identified. 1. (vs.1) A righteous person avoids certain practices. a. He does not walk "in the counsel of the ungodly." 1) "The ungodly" are wicked unrighteous people. 2) "The counsel" of such people must be avoided (Proverbs 4:14-17, 19). b. He does not stand "in the way of sinners." 1) "Sinners" are those who habitually practice sin. 2) "The way" of such people must be avoided (Proverbs 1:10-16). c. He does not sit "in the seat of the scornful." 1) "The scornful" despise and have contempt for things that please God. 2) "The seat" of such people must be avoided (Proverbs 22:10). 2. (vs.2) Positively, a righteous person: a. delights "in the law of the Lord" b. meditates on God's law continually (Psalm 119:97). C. (vs.3) A righteous person will be blessed abundantly. 1. He will be like the tree pictured in this verse. 2. Whatever he does will prosper. II. LET US CONSIDER WHAT IS WRITTEN ABOUT "THE UNGODLY" A. (vs.4) "The ungodly" are compared to the chaff driven away by the wind (Matthew 3:11-12). B. (vs.5) "The ungodly" will not stand: 1. "in the judgment" 2. "in the congregation of the righteous." C. (vs.6b) "The way of the ungodly shall perish." Conclusion: 1. Psalm 1 shows how God will bless "the righteous." 2. Let us "hunger and thirst after righteousness" as Jesus taught in Matthew 5:6. |
