Additional Principles
that Relate to Good Works

(Galatians 6:9-10)

Introduction:

         1. This morning we studied the instructions given in Galatians 6:9-10.
         2. This evening we are considering some "additional principles that relate to good works."

Discussion:

I.           THE  PROPER  MOTIVES  FOR  DOING  GOOD  WORKS

         A. (James 2:14-17) Having active faith will lead us to do good works.
         B. (1 John 3:16-19) Having the love of God in our hearts will lead us to do good works.
         C. (Luke 10:25-37) Loving our neighbors as ourselves will lead us to do good works.
         D. Improper motives include self-glorification and manipulation.
         E. Proper motives include having active faith, having the love of God in our hearts, and loving our
              neighbors as ourselves.

II.           THE  EXTENT  TO  WHICH  WE  ARE  TO  DO  GOOD  WORKS

         A. (Galatians 6:10) We are to do good "unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household
              of faith."

         B. Doing good works for fellow Christians is a blessing.
         C. However, Jesus taught His followers to include "enemies" (Matthew 5:43-45).
         D. This is discussed further in Romans 12:19-21.

III.           GOD  REMEMBERS  THE  GOOD  WORKS  THAT  WE  DO

         A. This principle is revealed in Hebrews 6:10.
         B. In Matthew 25, Jesus showed how good works will matter at the judgment.
              1. (vs.31-33) At the judgment, everyone will be separated into 2 groups -- one group will be on
the Lord's right hand and the other on His left hand.
              2. (vs.34-40) Jesus showed why those on His right hand will be blessed.
              3. (vs.41-46) He showed why those on His left hand will be punished.

Conclusion:

              1. Let us adopt the prayer of the wise man who said: "Lord, help me to do as much good as I can,
for as many people as I can, for as long as I can."
              2. This week,:
                  a. let us not become weary in doing good
                  b. let us remember that we will reap a reward at the harvest if we do not faint
                  c. let us take advantage of the opportunities presented to us to do good.
