The Psalms 28
Introduction: 1. According to Luke 24:44, the Psalms are a part of the Old Testament Scriptures. 2. Consequently, we must study the Psalms very carefully because they "were written for our learning" (Romans 15:4). 3. Seven psalms are referred to as "penitential psalms" (6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, 143). 4. These particular psalms reveal some very important principles relating to "forgiveness." 5. This lesson is based on information presented in Psalm 32. Discussion: I. (vs.1-2) DAVID FIRST DECLARED HOW A FORGIVEN PERSON IS "BLESSED" A. A key point is made in vs.10b -- God extends His mercy to those who trust in Him. B. God's mercy makes it possible for a person to be free of: 1. "transgression" 2. "sin" 3. "iniquity" 4. "guile." C. David listed several special blessings available to those who are forgiven. 1. (vs.6a) A godly person is able to talk to God through prayer. 2. (vs.6b-7) God preserves and delivers His people. 3. (vs.8) God provides instruction and guidance for His people. 4. (vs.11) Righteous people are able to rejoice. II. (vs.3-4) DAVID MENTIONED THE MISERY OF A PERSON WHO IS NOT FORGIVEN A. Another key point is made in vs.10a -- David showed how the wicked experience "many sorrows." B. David referred to a time when his life was not right with God -- he seems to have described his condition after he committed adultery and murder (2 Samuel 11). C. Some of David's anguish is revealed in 2 Samuel 12:15-19. D. (vs.9) David offered some sound advice about listening to God's instruction. III. (vs.5) DAVID RECEIVED GOD'S FORGIVENESS A. He acknowledged and confessed his sin, and God forgave him. B. Similar situations are found in: 1. Psalm 6:1-4, 6-9 2. Psalm 38:1-10, 15, 18, 21-22 3. Psalm 51:3-4, 7-10 4. Psalm 102: 4-5, 1-2 5. Psalm 130:1-3, 7-8 6. Psalm 143:4, 10-11 IV. ADDITIONAL MATTERS A. Jesus shed His blood to provide forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7). B. The Lord grants forgiveness to those who: 1. obey the Gospel (Acts 2:37-38) 2. walk in the light (1 John 1:7) 3. confess their sins (1 John 1:9; Acts 8:18-24). |
